The OpenSSL project issued a security bulletin that disclosed a high-risk vulnerability affecting OpenSSL v1.1.1d, 1.1.1e, and 1.1.1f. This vulnerability can be used to launch denial-of-service attacks. According to the developer, a server or client app that calls the SSL_check_chain() function during or after the TLS 1.3 handshake may crash due to an empty pointer reference caused by incorrect handling of the signature_algorithms_cert extension. Affected versions of OpenSSL 1.1.1 need to be upgraded to 1.1.1g as quickly as possible. The vulnerability was discovered by Bernd Edlinger, who reported it to the OpenSSL project on April 7. The release of the patch within two weeks was quick.
